Job: To supply & install a glass skylight in the bathroom of this Burpengary home. Roof Space Renovators installed a small fixed glass skylight in the bathroom, above the dark shower recess in the ensuite. . We also built the shaft and completed the internal works ready for painting.
Location: Burpengary Qld 4505 (servicing Brisbane, Sunshine Coast, Gold Coast, Ipswich – and all areas in between)
About Us!
Roof Space Renovators provide an end-to-end glass skylight supply and installation service. We are distributors of five (5) top quality brands of glass skylights – Velux, Atlite, Infiniti, Keylite and Fakro.
Licensed to complete not only the installation into all roof types, we also build the shaft and/or any other internal works required to complete the works to painting stage. We are often asked for average or estimated costs involved in completing an installation from start to finish. However, it is important to note that there are many variables involved in the installation of glass ‘roof window’ style skylights. These variables range from home to home and even between different areas within the same home.
Our service includes an obligation-free consultation, in order for our consultant the ability to provide a fixed quotation, taking into consideration all variables. Apart from the obvious, skylight size and model (whether fixed, manual opening or electrical opening) effecting the price, the consultant is required to take note of the roof material, as this effects the installation method into the roof. He also needs to take a number of measurements from on top of the roof. Measurements from inside the roof space are also required and the consultant needs to ensure that there are no obstructions, such as trusses or electrical wires obstructing the proposed installation location.
About this job
As mentioned, these clients wanted a skylight in the bathroom above the shower recess. During the consultation for these clients, the consultant determined that the clients were hoping for a small fixed (non-opening) skylight. The roof was a fairly steep 25ish° corrogated iron roof. The proposed location of the skylight was quite high in the roof. Therefore the distance between where the skylight would need to be installed, down to the ceiling of the shower recess was almost 2 metres in depth. Further, there were trusses running through the roof space, directly above the shower recess. What does all this mean?
Well, luckily the placement of the existing trusses still allowed for a narrow 565 wide skylight to be installed. It just meant that the shaft opening would need to be off centered in the shower recess and flush against the cornice on one side. The clients also needed to be aware that the skylight would be almost 2 metres above the ceiling. This means that the shaft leading up to the skylight would be almost 2 metres deep.

With regards to the roof being corrogated iron, a custom flashing is required for installation. Whilst most skylights brands are supplied with a flashing kit, our company prefers to have a custom flashing manufactured. Roof Space Renovators will not install a skylight into a metal roof without a custom flashing. Although the requirement for custom flashings is an extra expense for the client, it does provide the homeowners with assurance that the skylight will remain leak proof, which is extremely important. The good news is that custom flashings can be colour matched, in order for them to blend better with the roof.
On the Roof
Roof Space Renovators have two options for the finishing of the shaft (where it meets the ceiling). We can plaster square set it, or install a timber bead around the shaft opening. In order to save a bit of money, the clients chose for the shaft opening to be finished with the timber bead, as opposed to the square set plastered finish. They decided that a square set finish was unnecessary considering the skylight was positioned above the shower in a nook.
Timber Bead Finish
Considering the skylight installed is one of the smallest glass skylights on the market (565x674mm) and the shaft is almost 2 metres deep, this skylight lets in a considerable amount of light. The homeowners are extremely happy with the finished product. They no longer require the light on in the ensuite to have a shower during the day. They have also mentioned to us that it lets in a considerable amount of moonlight, when the moon is large. The clients could not be happier. They contacted us after they had completed the painting and allowed for us to return and take photos. The clients commented that they love the natural light the ‘roof window’ skylight allows in. They also mentioned that they believed the skylight has assisted in a decrease in mould within the shower recess.
