The Brief:

To provide these clients with the best solution to bring light into their stairwell void.

Description:

These clients, recently contacted Roof Space Renovators seeking advice on the best solution to bring light into their dim stairwell. They live in a high-set townhouse and the staircase is located in the center of the home. After having tolerated this poorly lit staircase for years, they finally decided it was time to investigate their options.

The ‘roof window’ glass skylights particularly appealed to them, as maximum natural light flooding down their stairwell, is what they sought. However, whilst they were excited about this skylight concept, the idea was also a little daunting. Especially considering the proposed placement for the skylight was above the stairwell and the ceiling is extremely high.

Our Process:

Also commonly referred to as ‘roof windows’, our range of glass skylights are designed to allow maximum natural light into the room. Opening options are available if a venting skylight is required. At Roof Space Renovators, we supply and install numerous brands, sizes and styles of glass skylights, to meet various requirements.

However, due to the varying factors involved in the installation of these skylights, our company procedure is for one of our consultants to first visit the home, prior to our company providing any advice. The installation of a glass skylight / roof window is not always an easy task or a small investment. Therefore we first need to discuss the brief and assess the possibilities by conducting a measure. This is to ensure the skylight can be positioned correctly and meet the homeowners brief.

The Job:

Following a visit from our consultant, it was established that a 550x1400mm glass skylight would work perfectly. Even better news for the clients, was that this skylight could be almost perfectly centered in the ceiling above the stairwell. Sometimes retro-fitting skylights into a home can be tricky, due to the roof structure, electrical wires and lighting, ducted air-conditioning etc. And although this job had the challenge of height, none of these other issues were present.

The installation of this skylight involved custom flashing’s, due to the roof being corrugated iron. Scaffold was required to complete the internal works. Using scaffold, we framed the internal shaft, lined it with gyprock and plaster square-set the shaft ready for painting.
