The 3 factors that affect your skylight placement

Oftentimes the dream skylight location you envision can be ‘clouded’ by one very important factor.

1. Roof obstructions

Your roof can be home to quite a few hidden obstacles, from shallow roof cavities to trusses, electrical fittings, pipes and more! Don’t even get us started on that sneaky asbestos!

All of these things can and often do affect the location, quantity and size of your skylights, among other considerations.

The good news is, obstructions are often not an issue for us here at Roof Space Renovators. We have a strong network of structural engineers, electricians, plumbers, air con specialists, solar guys and asbestos removers that we work with to help relocate those obstructions if needed (for additional cost).

We always communicate these things with our clients and work with you to achieve the best outcome for your skylight installation.

2. Roof Structure

Your roof structure can be a total game-changer when it comes to skylight placement.

For example, for truss roofs, the positioning of your trusses may cause an obstructed view of your skylight.

Removal of trusses are an option if you’re dead-set on a certain spot for your skylight, but please note that this does incur additional structural engineering fees.

However, if you’re flexible on placement, our awesome consultants always recommend alternative locations which can often be better than what you were originally hoping for!

Aside from trusses in your roof’s structure, your roof’s ridge can also cause issues. Often when a roof ridge issue arises, it usually can’t be worked around for exact placement, however our consultants are always ready to help with an alternative that’ll suit your needs.

3. Skylight Size

On the occasion that we can mount a skylight in your desired spot, you’ll have to be mindful of its size!

This is because if your skylights are bigger than the width between your trusses, you’ll often find that if we install your skylight, there might be a truss or two obstructing the light.

Some clients love that, some don’t at all. It’s all up to you – but rest assured, whether we use smaller skylights, multiple skylights, or another solution, we always work with you to get to a solution that you’re happy with.
