Before the transformation
Returning from overseas with a growing family, the Brisbane family found themselves in need of an extra bedroom. Rather than building an expensive extension to their four-bedroom home, they looked to the untapped possibilities of their current roof space.
Their house, nestled on a sloped block with two levels at the rear, offered a unique opportunity to utilise the adjacent roof space. Plus, it meant accessing the new room was easy because it was right next to the existing second floor.
How we added a room onto the house
The family opted for a deluxe attic room. We love these types of conversions for storage, home offices, and games rooms too!
Due to the unique layout of the home and the sloped land, we built a spacious 15m2 room into the front-facing roof cavity.
This was no small feat with the project including:
- Structural engineering
- A small staircase (7 risers)
- 2 attic windows and blinds
- Building approval and certification
- Electrical works to relocate cables and install a TV port, power points, downlights, insulation and a solar powered heat extractor
Nor can we say this project was “simple”…
The family was renting out the property, so coordinating our staff, real estate inspections, and tenant entrance notices was a unique logistical problem. However, it wasn’t anything we couldn’t overcome – the happy family who now live in 5 gorgeous bedrooms and the fantastic result make it all worthwhile.
